The Department of Philosophy, Jadavpur University was founded along with the University in 1955 and the teaching of different courses started in 1956. Since its inception, the Department has been recognised nationally as a leading centre for the study of Philosophy and philosophical research in both the Indian and Western traditions. |
It is under the able leadership of Professor Gopinath Bhattacharya that the Department got its orientation towards the study of both Indian and Western Philosophy. This approach was later adopted by many other Universities in India and is now an established practice, recommended even by the UGC and ICPR. The Department achieved great heights under the guidance of teachers like Professor Kali Krishna Banerjee, Professor Pranab Kumar Sen and Professor Debi Prasad Chattopadhyaya and was identified by the UGC as a SAP Department in 1977 and a Centre of Advanced Study in Philosophy in 1985. The continued guidance of teachers like Professor Sailaja Kumar Bhattacharya, Pandit Visvabandhu Bhattacharya, Professor Arun K Mookerjea, Professor Pradyot Kumar Mukhopadhyaya, Professor Kalyan Sengupta, Professor Hiranmay Banerjee, Professor Sukharanjan Saha, Dr. M. N. Mitra, Professor Sutapa Saha, Professor Tapan Kumar Chakraborty, Professor Tushar Kanti Sarkar and many others led the Department to complete twenty five years of Special Assistance Programme (SAP) under the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2002 and till today, the Department continues to be a Centre of Advanced Study in Philosophy in India. The Centre is privileged in having its own building, Darshan Bhavan, inside the University Campus.
