The Department was chosen by the UGC as the Curriculum Development Centre in Philosophy and its model curriculum is meant for the teaching of Philosophy at all levels in India. |
The Department is responsible for major breakthroughs in the areas of Navya Nyaya, Buddhism and Vedanta on the one hand and the Philosophy of Mind, Cognitive Science and Applied Philosophy on the other. The Department also specialises in comparative studies between Navya Nyaya on the one hand and Modern Logic and the Philosophy of Language on the other. Since the ancient and the contemporary have converged in the philosophical studies undertaken by the Department, traditional theories of mind are being studied in the light of the latest developments in Science and Technology. Similarly, theories in Ethics and Social Philosophy are being studied for their practical and social relevance, particularly in areas like education, medicine, environment and women’s issues.
