COURSES

PREAMBLE

In order to maintain uniformity across the country the UGC has insisted on introducing fourteen compulsory courses for BA Major, six compulsory courses for BA Minor and twelve compulsory (core) courses for MA in Philosophy. This pattern has been followed in the design of the courses offered by the Department of Philosophy, Jadavpur University.

Philosophy is an explorative rather than a merely accumulative discipline. The courses have been designed in order to acquaint students with original texts in both the Indian and Western traditions not only for the purpose of knowing what the great philosophers said but also to acquaint them with styles of thinking, reasoning and philosophising. In keeping with the orientation of the Department, equal emphasis has been laid on both Indian and Western Philosophy.
